Scripts Manent's adaptations are suitable for the following kinds of dubbing:
Lip-sync
Lip-sync, short for lip-synchronisation, is the technique that is generally used to dub films, shorts and series. As can be inferred from the name, lip-sync requires the script to be adapted in such a way that the text heard in the language of the translation and the actors' mouth movements and gestures coincide as far as possible. This way the public will get the impression that it is the actors themselves who pronounce the dubbed dialogues.
Therefore, the script adaptation for lip-sync dubbing will match the isochrony (speech rhythm), the speaker's mouth movements and will contain numerous additional indications for the actor – including laughs, cries, mouth sounds, pauses etc. – as well as information on the character position on the screen (and therefore on whether the character's mouth is visible), on the sound quality and the kind of shot.
Simil-sync
The simil-sync is the dubbing technique used predominantly for reality shows and factual series.
This technique consists in translating the lines in such a way that they match the isochrony (speech rhythm) of the original ones, but not necessarily also the speaker's mouth movements. This is also due to the fact that the original audio is often kept underneath the dubbed version at a very low volume. Furthermore, the translated and adapted script will also contain numerous additional indications for the actor – including laughs, cries, mouth sounds, pauses etc. – since they will be dubbed during the recording phase as well.
Voice over
The voice over dubbing is the technique used predominantly for interviews, documentaries and corporate videos and consists in speaking the translations over the original audio. The original dialogues in the source language are therefore not eliminated, but can still be heard underneath the newly recorded audio, which often starts/ends a few seconds later/earlier than the original track. However, when a narrator is off screen, his/her original voice tends to be completely eliminated in the dubbed version.
The translated and adapted script in this case will take into account the length/duration of the dialogues, the presence of more narrators or characters, the register used and the intentionality of the text.
